BHSVA Supports Virginian Children & Teens Through Services Such As:

Psychological Evaluations & Assessment
Our psychological evaluations and assessments are designed to provide a thorough understanding of a child’s cognitive, emotional, and behavioral functioning. Utilizing a variety of age-appropriate testing methods, our specialists carefully evaluate each child’s strengths and challenges to create a clear and comprehensive profile. These assessments are instrumental in identifying underlying issues, guiding accurate diagnoses, and informing the development of effective treatment plans. Whether for academic concerns, behavioral difficulties, or emotional struggles, our evaluations offer valuable insights that pave the way for targeted interventions and support, ensuring each child receives the care they need to thrive.

Children & Teens Mental Health Therapy
Our children’s mental health therapy services for children and teens centers on providing compassionate, individualized care that nurtures emotional well-being and resilience. We understand that children may face a range of mental health challenges, from anxiety and depression to trauma and stress. Our therapists use evidence-based approaches tailored to each child’s developmental stage, creating a safe and supportive space where they can explore their feelings and learn healthy coping mechanisms. Through play therapy, talk therapy, and other age-appropriate interventions, we work to empower children to overcome their difficulties, build self-esteem, and develop the emotional tools they need to lead fulfilling lives.

Child & Teen Medication Services
BHSVA offers comprehensive medication management services for children and teens, providing thoughtful, age-appropriate psychiatric care that supports emotional, behavioral, and developmental needs. Our child and adolescent providers conduct thorough evaluations, collaborate closely with families, and monitor each child’s progress to ensure medications are safe, effective, and tailored to their unique challenges. With a focus on clear communication, education, and compassionate support, we help young people and their caregivers better understand treatment options and feel confident in their care plan.

Trauma-Informed Care
Trauma-informed care offers patients the opportunity to engage more fully in their mental health care, develop a trusting relationship with their provider, and improve long-term health outcomes. This avoids judgmental attitudes and re-victimization of children & teens who have survived trauma. By actively integrating knowledge about trauma into policies, procedures, and practices, providers create an environment of safety and transparency. This empowers individuals by respecting their autonomy and promoting resilience throughout the healing process.

Children's Behavioral Therapy
Our behavioral health services for children and teens are designed to address a wide range of behavioral challenges, helping children develop positive behaviors and social skills. Whether a child is struggling with ADHD, anger, defiance, or other behavioral issues, our specialists provide targeted interventions that are both evidence-based and age-appropriate. We work closely with children and their families to understand the root causes of behavioral concerns and create personalized treatment plans that promote healthy behavior patterns. Through a combination of behavior therapy, mental health skills-building, and family training, we aim to help children achieve greater self-control, improve their relationships, and thrive in their daily lives.

Intensive In-Home Services
Our Intensive In-Home Therapy program is designed to support children and adolescents ages 5 to 18 who are at risk of out-of-home placement due to behavioral, mental health, or substance use challenges. We also provide critical support for children transitioning back home after such placements. This program focuses on addressing key issues such as poor problem-solving abilities and difficulties in building healthy interpersonal relationships. By bringing therapeutic services directly into the home, we work closely with families to create a stable, supportive environment that fosters positive change. Our goal is to equip children with the skills they need to overcome challenges, strengthen family bonds, and remain in their home environment.

Youth Mentors
Our Youth Mentor Program connects children and teenagers with positive role models who provide guidance, support, and encouragement during critical stages of development. Designed for young people facing challenges in school, social settings, or at home, our mentors offer a trusted, consistent presence that helps build confidence and resilience. Through regular one-on-one interactions, mentors assist with goal-setting, problem-solving, and developing healthy coping strategies. They also help foster social skills and positive peer relationships, serving as both a friend and a guide. Our youth mentors are dedicated to empowering children and teens to navigate life’s challenges, make positive choices, and achieve their full potential.

Crisis Support
BHSVA has two essential crisis response program that support individuals when they need help most: our 24/7 crisis phone line & our 23-hour Crisis Rooms. Through the round-the-clock phone line, callers can immediately reach trained behavioral health professionals who offer emotional support, de-escalation, and guidance at any hour. For those needing in-person care, our offices in Richmond, Norfolk, & Spotsylvania offer a safe alternative to the emergency room; providing assessment, stabilization, and crisis counseling for up to 23 hours (licensing guildines prevent a 24 hour stay). Together, these programs ensure that individuals in crisis receive timely and compassionate care when they need it most. Whether by phone or in person, BHSVA is here for you.
