You may think it’s an interesting collaboration, but crisis response counselors are now partnering with cops.

Why?

Well, it’s estimated that around 20% of police calls involve a mental health crisis, and that statistic continues to grow. 84% of law enforcement officials have said mental health–related calls have increased over the course of their careers, and 63% said the amount of time their department spends on mental health related calls has increased.

The problem is that referring these people to appropriate mental health resources takes time and resources, especially those from smaller departments.

As a result, cops are now partnering with crisis response counselors (including psychologists) out in the field or behind the scenes.

The reason for this is so that people with mental illness in crisis have an easier access to mental healthcare and a lot of weight is taken off the shoulders of the already stressed-out police officers.

It’s been said that problems come up when mental health counselors and cops work side by side, but not together. This solution solves that problem, as it allows people to get quicker access to the help they need and makes the job more efficient for the police department and its citizens.
